Chipbreaker Profile
The SGS series employs a proprietary parabolic flute geometry optimized for 2-flute solid carbide drills. This design ensures:
- Progressive Chip Curling: Chips form in a tight spiral, reducing chip-to-workpiece contact and minimizing built-up edge.
- Enhanced Chip Evacuation: Wide flute volume with polished surface (Ra ≤ 0.4 μm) allows rapid chip removal, preventing chip packing in deep-hole applications up to 6×D.
- Reduced Cutting Forces: The optimized rake face angle (25° effective rake) lowers axial thrust by up to 15% compared to standard twist drills.
- Stable Chip Formation: Consistent chip thickness across the entire flute length ensures predictable tool wear patterns and longer tool life.
Recommended Applications & Workpiece Materials
| Material Group (ISO) | Material Examples | Suitability |
|---|---|---|

Application Map by Operation
| Operation | Recommended | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Through-Hole Drilling | ✓ Yes | Optimal chip evacuation; use standard peck cycle for D > 3×D |
| Blind-Hole Drilling | ✓ Yes | Ensure adequate coolant flow to flush chips from hole bottom |
| Stack Drilling | ✓ Yes | Use reduced feed when exiting first plate to avoid burr formation |
| Cross-Hole Drilling | △ Caution | Reduce feed by 30% when intersecting holes; use rigid setup |
| Inclined Entry/Exit | △ Caution | Angle > 10° requires reduced speed; consider spot drill first |
| Counterboring | ✗ No | Not designed for counterboring; use dedicated counterbore tool |
| Trepanning | ✗ No | Not applicable to solid drills |
Recommended Cutting Conditions
Values below are starting recommendations for stable, rigid setups with internal coolant (70 bar minimum). Adjust based on machine power, workpiece clamping, and hole depth.
| Workpiece Material | Vc (m/min) | Feed f (mm/rev) | RPM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-Alloy Steel (P) | 100 | 0.08 | 7957 |
| Stainless Steel (M) | 70 | 0.064 | 5570 |
| Gray Cast Iron (K) | 120 | 0.096 | 9549 |
| Aluminum Alloy (N) | 180 | 0.12 | 14323 |
Note: For hole depths > 3×D, reduce Vc by 10% and feed by 15%. For depths > 5×D, apply peck drilling cycle (Q = 1.5×D, R = 0.5×D).
Operating Guidelines
- Coolant Supply: Minimum 70 bar internal coolant (emulsion 6–8% or neat oil) is mandatory for optimal tool life and hole surface finish.
- Peck Cycle: For holes > 3×D, use a peck depth of 1.5×D with full retract to break chips. For > 5×D, reduce peck depth to 1.0×D.
- Entry Surface: Ensure the workpiece surface is flat and perpendicular to the drill axis. For inclined or curved surfaces, use a center drill or spot drill (90°) to create a stable starting point.
- Tool Overhang: Keep tool overhang to a minimum (L/D ≤ 4 for best results). If longer overhang is unavoidable, reduce cutting parameters by 20%.
- Spindle Runout: Verify spindle runout is ≤ 0.01 mm at the tool tip. Excessive runout will cause uneven wear and premature chipping.
- Feed Rate: Do not reduce feed below 0.05 mm/rev, as this can cause rubbing and work-hardening in stainless steels.
- Re-Sharpening: This tool is not designed for re-sharpening. Discard when flank wear reaches 0.3 mm or when chipping is observed.
Toolholder Compatibility
| Holder Type | Recommended Series | Max Runout |
|---|---|---|
| Collet Chuck | ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 (depending on shank) | ≤ 0.015 mm |
| Hydraulic Chuck | HydroForce, MegaE Chuck, NewBaby Chuck | ≤ 0.005 mm |
| Shrink Fit Holder | Haimer PowerShrink, Schunk Tribos | ≤ 0.003 mm |
| Milling Chuck | NT Tool Mega Chuck, BIG Daishowa NewBaby | ≤ 0.010 mm |
| Weldon Holder | Standard Side-Lock (for flat-shank versions) | ≤ 0.020 mm |
Tip: For maximum hole accuracy and surface finish, use a hydraulic or shrink-fit holder with runout ≤ 0.005 mm.
