Each geometry in this series is offered in multiple grade variants under different EDP numbers; the EDP on this page corresponds to the variant marked above.
Chipbreaker Profile
The 4-flute, 30° helix design balances core strength with efficient chip evacuation. Chips are curled away from the cutting zone along the helical flutes, supporting higher feed-per-tooth values in profiling and finishing while maintaining a rigid, chatter-resistant tool core.
| Feature | Specification | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Helix angle | 30° | Balances shearing action and edge strength |
| Flute count | 4 | Higher feed capacity and surface finish |
| Chip gullet | Optimized, polished | Fast, unobstructed chip evacuation |
| Edge preparation | Honed micro-edge | Stable cut entry, reduced micro-chipping |
| Relief | Eccentric primary relief | Lower friction and heat at the flank |
Recommended Applications & Workpiece Materials

Recommended Cutting Conditions
Catalog starting values for a 7/64″, 4-flute tool. Profile: Ae ≤ 0.25×DC, Ap ≤ 1.5×DC. Slot: Ae = 1×DC, Ap ≤ 0.4–1×DC (2FL: ≤1×DC with reduced Fz). Reduce speed and feed for harder material conditions; for finishing reduce feed and Ae (≤ 0.02×DC).
| Material Group | Vc Profile / Slot (sfm) | Fz (ipt) | RPM Profile | Feed Profile (ipm) | RPM Slot | Feed Slot (ipm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steels (1018, 1040, 12L15) | 460 / 335 | 0.00026 | 16,070 | 16.41 | 11,700 | 11.95 |
| Alloy Steels (4140, 4150, 8620) | 335 / 245 | 0.00017 | 11,700 | 8.03 | 8,560 | 5.87 |
| Stainless Steels (304, 316, 17-4 PH) | 255 / 185 | 0.00017 | 8,910 | 5.97 | 6,460 | 4.33 |

Formulas: RPM = (Vc × 3.82) / DC • Feed (ipm) = Fz × number of flutes × RPM.
Operating Guidelines
- Hold total indicated runout (TIR) below 0.0004″ (0.01 mm); micro-diameter tools are extremely sensitive to runout.
- Use the shortest possible tool overhang and a rigid, balanced holder; avoid extending the flute length requirement.
- Start at the lower end of the recommended speed/feed window and increase in steps while observing chip color and spindle load.
- For finishing passes, reduce radial engagement to ≤ 0.02×DC and reduce feed accordingly for best surface quality.
- Prefer climb milling for best surface finish and tool life on machines with minimal backlash.
- Use flood coolant or air blast appropriate to the material; for AlTiN-coated tools, dry machining or MQL is often optimal in steels.
- Do not dwell or rub in the cut — maintain positive feed to prevent work hardening, especially in stainless steels.
- Inspect the cutting edge regularly under magnification; replace at the first sign of flank wear > 0.004″ to protect part accuracy.
