Product Overview

The Kyocera SGS30379 is a Series 1 solid carbide end mill from the Kyocera SGS Precision Tools general-application program. It features a 3/8″ (9.525 mm) cutting diameter, 4 flutes with a 30° helix, a square end geometry and a Ti-NAMITE®-A (AlTiN) coating on a tough micrograin carbide substrate. A Weldon flat on the shank provides positive, slip-free clamping in side-lock holders. Engineered for general-purpose profiling and slotting in steels, stainless, cast iron and non-ferrous materials, it delivers reliable, high-precision milling performance across steels, stainless steels, cast irons and non-ferrous alloys.

Grade Details - Key Grade Characteristics

Substrate: premium micrograin solid carbide engineered for an optimal balance of wear resistance and transverse rupture strength in general-purpose milling.

CharacteristicSpecification
CoatingTi-NAMITE®-A (AlTiN), PVD applied
Coating micro-hardness≈ 3,300 HV 0.05
Thermal stabilityup to ≈ 900°C at the cutting edge
Friction behaviorAl2O3 surface film forms in cut, reducing crater wear and built-up edge
Best suited forSteels, alloy steels, tool steels, stainless steels and cast irons; dry or minimal-lubrication milling
Key benefitExtended tool life and higher permissible cutting speeds versus uncoated carbide

Chipbreaker Profile

The 4-flute, 30° helix design balances core strength with efficient chip evacuation. Chips are curled away from the cutting zone along the helical flutes, supporting higher feed-per-tooth values in profiling and finishing while maintaining a rigid, chatter-resistant tool core.

Recommended Cutting Conditions

Catalog starting values for a 3/8″, 4-flute tool. Profile: Ae ≤ 0.25×DC, Ap ≤ 1.5×DC. Slot: Ae = 1×DC, Ap ≤ 0.4–1×DC (2FL: ≤1×DC with reduced Fz). Reduce speed and feed for harder material conditions; for finishing reduce feed and Ae (≤ 0.02×DC).

Formulas: RPM = (Vc × 3.82) / DC  •  Feed (ipm) = Fz × number of flutes × RPM.

Operating Guidelines

  • Hold total indicated runout (TIR) below 0.0004″ (0.01 mm); micro-diameter tools are extremely sensitive to runout.
  • Use the shortest possible tool overhang and a rigid, balanced holder; avoid extending the flute length requirement.
  • Start at the lower end of the recommended speed/feed window and increase in steps while observing chip color and spindle load.
  • For finishing passes, reduce radial engagement to ≤ 0.02×DC and reduce feed accordingly for best surface quality.
  • Prefer climb milling for best surface finish and tool life on machines with minimal backlash.
  • Use flood coolant or air blast appropriate to the material; for AlTiN-coated tools, dry machining or MQL is often optimal in steels.
  • Do not dwell or rub in the cut — maintain positive feed to prevent work hardening, especially in stainless steels.
  • Inspect the cutting edge regularly under magnification; replace at the first sign of flank wear > 0.004″ to protect part accuracy.

Toolholder Compatibility

Shank diameter: 3/8″ (9.525 mm), tolerance h6. All standard holder systems for this shank size are compatible:
