Product Overview

The Kyocera SGM09137 (KSPT EDP 09137) is a Series M4 micro end mill from KYOCERA SGS Precision Tools — a solid, sub-micron grain carbide, 4-flute, 30° helix, corner-radius cutter with a 0.035" cutting diameter, 0.010" corner radius and long 3xD flute length. The four-flute design raises feed-per-rev and delivers the finest floor and wall finishes in the micro line. Finished with KSPT's proprietary Ti-Namite-A (AlTiN) PVD coating for superior chip flow and wear resistance.

The 3xD long-flute configuration supports axial depths up to 2 x DC at light radial engagement — ideal for finishing deep, thin walls and tall micro features in one pass. With a balanced 0.010" corner radius that blends edge strength with surface-finish quality for general micro work, the SGM09137 produces crisp detail, low burr formation and mirror-quality finishes in tool steels, stainless steels, cast iron, aluminum and copper alloys, titanium and high-temperature alloys — a proven choice for micro molds, medical components, electronics housings, watchmaking and fine engraving work.

ISO Designation Breakdown

As a fractional-inch solid carbide round tool, this product is designated by its KSPT catalog (EDP) code rather than an ISO 1832 insert code. The table below decodes every element of the full product designation.

Grade Details - Key Grade Characteristics

This tool pairs KSPT's application-specific sub-micron grain carbide substrate with the proprietary Ti-Namite-A (AlTiN) PVD coating — the wear-resistant option in the M3CR family. Key grade characteristics:

CharacteristicEngineering Benefit
Ti-Namite-A (AlTiN) coatingAluminum-titanium-nitride PVD layer engineered for abrasive wear resistance in steels, cast irons and super alloys
Superior chip flowKSPT's proprietary coating promotes smooth chip evacuation, driving productivity even at low spindle speeds
Thermal barrierAlTiN forms a protective aluminum-oxide surface in the cut, shielding the edge at elevated temperatures
Sub-micron carbide substrateUltra-fine grain core resists micro-chipping at micro diameters
Extended tool lifeCoating + micro-tool substrate significantly outlast uncoated edges in ferrous and high-temp materials
ISO 9001:2015 manufactureEvery tool produced under KSPT ISO-certified quality procedures for lot-to-lot consistency

Grade Comparison Matrix

The M4CR geometry is stocked in two material options. This listing is the Ti-Namite-A (AlTiN) coated version (EDP 09137); the uncoated version is orderable as EDP 08997.

Chipbreaker Profile

Solid carbide end mills do not use a molded chipbreaker; instead, chip control on the SGM09137 is engineered directly into the flute and face geometry:

Geometry ElementChip-Control Function
4-flute geometryMore teeth per revolution for finer finish and higher table feed; best chip control in light-engagement finishing
30° helical flutesShears chips away from the cut and augers them up and out of the pocket, reducing re-cutting
Ti-Namite-A coated flutesLow-friction, wear-resistant surface — chips evacuate smoothly and the coating resists chip abrasion
Positive rake faceProduces small, manageable chips at micro feed-per-tooth values and lowers cutting pressure
Corner-radius edge prepControls chip thickness at the corner, the most highly stressed point of the edge

Application note: four flutes leave less chip space than three — in full-width slots keep Ap at or below the tabulated limit, evacuate chips with a directed air blast or coolant, and mill deep slots in steps. The catalog feed values in this listing already include chip-thinning adjustment where applicable.

KSPT baseline parameters for the 0.035" diameter, long 3xD flute length (feeds include the ×1.41 4-flute multiplier for this flute length). rpm = Vc × 3.82 ÷ DC; ipm = baseline feed × multiplier. Fz shown for the nearest chart reference diameter (0.0312").

Reduce speed and feed for harder materials. If recommended rpm exceeds machine capability, use maximum available rpm and recalculate feed.

Operating Guidelines

TopicRecommendation
Tool runoutHold total indicated runout (TIR) to ≤ 0.0002" at the tool — runout is the #1 cause of premature micro-tool failure
ToolholdingUse precision collet, shrink-fit or hydraulic micro chucks; never side-lock or set-screw holders
Gauge lengthClamp maximum shank length; keep stick-out to the minimum that clears the workpiece and fixture
Milling strategyClimb mill whenever possible; program arc-lead entries and avoid sharp direction reversals at full engagement
Entry movesHelical ramp at ≤ 1° using slotting parameters; straight plunging is not recommended with the 0.035" end
Coolant / chip clearingFlood coolant for steels, stainless, titanium and super alloys; directed air blast for aluminum, plastics and deep slots
FinishingReserve a finishing allowance of ≤ 0.02 × DC (0.0007") radially and reduce feed ~30% for mirror results
Chip evacuationWith 4 flutes, clear chips every pass in slots — compressed chips are the main cause of corner breakage
Tool life monitoringInspect the edge under ≥ 20× magnification; replace at the first sign of micro-chipping or corner wear
Break-inRun the first 5–10 minutes at ~70% of table feed to condition the edge, then ramp to full parameters

Toolholder Compatibility

The 1/8" (3.175 mm) h6 cylindrical shank fits all standard micro-tool holding systems:

Holder TypeSpecificationSuitability / Notes
ER collet chuckER11 or ER16 with 1/8" (3.175 mm) precision collet●●● Excellent — most common choice; verify TIR after assembly
Shrink-fit holder3.175 mm micro shrink-fit bore●●● Excellent — best runout and balance for high rpm
Hydraulic micro chuck3.175 mm bore, radial clamping●●● Excellent — vibration damping for fine finishes
High-speed spindle24,000–60,000 rpm recommendedRequired to reach catalog Vc in non-ferrous materials; else use max rpm and recalculate feed
Milling chuck / side lockSet-screw type holders✕ Not recommended — damages shank and induces runout
Balance qualityG2.5 or better at operating rpmCritical above 20,000 rpm with micro tools
