Product Overview
The Kyocera SGS SGS30900 is a multi-piece solid-carbide ball nose end mill set from the Kyocera SGS milling program. Every tool is a 3-flute, TN (TiN) coated ball nose mill, covering the most-used fractional diameters for 3D contouring, die & mold finishing and surface machining.
The 3-flute layout opens deep chip gullets and suppresses harmonic chatter, while the TiN (Titanium Nitride) coating protects every ball radius in the set. All tools arrive in a fitted storage case that protects the delicate tips and keeps sizes organized at the machine.

Chipbreaker Profile
Every ball nose tool in the set controls chips through its flute and gash geometry:
- Extra-deep polished gullets — fewer flutes means more room per flute, so chips clear before they mark the surface.
- 30° helix shears material progressively along the ball radius, minimizing chatter.
- Odd (3) flute count breaks up harmonic vibration for chatter-free finishes.
- Center-cutting ball gash maintains cutting action at the tip center.
Recommended Applications & Workpiece Materials
| Workpiece Material (ISO Class) | Suitability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ISO P — Carbon & alloy steels (≤35 HRC) | Excellent | Primary application |
| ISO M — Stainless steels (303/304/316) | Very Good | Light radial engagement, steady feed |
| ISO K — Cast irons | Very Good | General-purpose milling |
| Copper Alloys (brass, bronze) | Good | Light cuts, air blast |
| ISO N — Aluminum (wrought) | Fair | Possible; uncoated variant preferred |
| ISO H — Hardened steels (>45 HRC) | Not recommended | Use TiAlN-coated variant |
Application Map by Operation
| Milling Operation | Suitability | Guideline |
|---|---|---|
| 3D Contouring & Surfacing | ★★★★★ | Stepover ≤ 5–10% of D for mirror finishes |
| Die & Mold Finishing | ★★★★★ | Tilt tool 10–15° to keep tip center out of cut |
| Fillet & Radius Milling | ★★★★★ | Match ball radius to part fillet |
| Engraving | ★★★★☆ | Use minimum quantity lubrication |
| Rest Milling / Corner Cleanup | ★★★★☆ | Pick set size to match corner radius |
| Full Slotting | ★★☆☆☆ | Not recommended — use square-end set |
Recommended Cutting Conditions
| Workpiece Material | Cutting Speed | Feed per Tooth (per tool size) |
|---|---|---|
| Mild / Low-Carbon Steel | 110 SFM | 0.6% of tool diameter |
| Alloy Steel (≤35 HRC) | 90 SFM | 0.6% of tool diameter |
| Stainless Steel (304/316) | 75 SFM | 0.6% of tool diameter |
| Cast Iron | 120 SFM | 0.6% of tool diameter |
| Brass / Bronze | 200 SFM | 0.6% of tool diameter |
RPM = SFM × 3.82 ÷ tool diameter. Finishing values at ≤10% stepover.
Operating Guidelines
- Keep tool-holder runout below 0.0004" (10 µm) TIR on every size.
- Tilt the tool 10–15° on flat areas so the low-speed tip center never dwells in the cut.
- TiN is a general-purpose coating — use flood coolant or MQL in steels for best life.
- Return each tool to its fitted slot after use — ball tips chip easily when stored loose.
- Replenish individual sizes from the same TN-coated 3FL series as they wear.
Toolholder Compatibility
| Holder System | Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shrink-Fit Holder | Sized to shank | ≤3 µm runout — first choice for finishing |
| ER Collet Chuck | ER16 / ER20 collets per shank size | Best all-round choice |
| Hydraulic Chuck | Sized to shank | Vibration damping for fine finishes |
| Spindle Interface | HSK-E40/A63, BT40, CAT40 adapters | High-speed spindles preferred |
