10. Operating Guidelines
- Speed & Feed Entry: Always start at the lower end of the recommended cutting speed range and increase gradually while monitoring tool wear and surface finish.
- Peck Drilling: For holes deeper than 3xD, implement a peck cycle with 1-2xD peck depth. Retract fully to break chips and allow coolant to flush the hole.
- Coolant Pressure: Maintain minimum 20 bar internal coolant pressure. For deep holes (4-5xD), increase to 50-70 bar for effective chip evacuation.
- Pre-Drilling: When drilling on inclined surfaces or cast skins, use a spotting drill or center drill to create a 90° entry point before drilling.
- Tool Overhang: Minimize tool overhang. Use the shortest possible toolholder and keep overhang to less than 4xD for maximum rigidity.
- Chip Control: Monitor chip formation. Ideal chips should be short, curled segments (C-type or 6-type). Long stringy chips indicate insufficient feed or coolant.
- Tool Life Monitoring: Replace the drill when flank wear reaches 0.15 mm or when burr height exceeds 0.05 mm. Do not wait for catastrophic failure.
11. Toolholder Compatibility
| Toolholder Type | Compatibility | Min. Collet Size | Runout Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic Chuck (Hydro) | ★★★★★ Recommended | Hydro 9.3-12.3 mm | ≤ 3 μm @ 3xD |
| Shrink Fit Chuck | ★★★★★ Recommended | Shrink 9.3 mm | ≤ 3 μm @ 3xD |
| ER Collet Chuck (Precision) | ★★★★☆ Very Good | ER32 / ER40 | ≤ 5 μm @ 3xD |
| Weldon Side-Lock Holder | ★★★☆☆ Good | Weldon 9.3 mm | ≤ 10 μm @ 3xD |
| Milling Chuck (Power) | ★★★☆☆ Good | Power 9.3-15.3 mm | ≤ 8 μm @ 3xD |
Note: For optimal performance with this 9.3 mm drill, hydraulic or shrink-fit toolholders are strongly recommended. Ensure toolholder TIR does not exceed 5 μm measured at 3xD from the spindle nose. Use balanced toolholders (G2.5 @ 25,000 rpm minimum) for high-speed applications.
