Note: Start at the lower end of the range and increase based on machine rigidity, coolant delivery, and hole depth-to-diameter ratio. For holes deeper than 3×D, reduce Vc by 15% and use a peck cycle.

Operating Guidelines

  • Coolant: High-pressure internal coolant (70–100 bar) is strongly recommended for holes > 2×D. Use water-soluble coolant with 8–10% concentration.
  • Peck Cycle: For 3×D–5×D: peck at 1.5×D increments. For > 5×D: peck at 1.0×D increments with full retract.
  • Entry Angle: Ensure perpendicular entry (±0.5°) or use a spot drill / chamfer to prevent walk.
  • Speed/Feed Ramp: Ramp to full speed over 2–3 seconds; do not plunge at full RPM.
  • Tool Life Check: Monitor flank wear (VB). Regrind or replace when VB = 0.15–0.20 mm for steel, 0.10–0.15 mm for stainless.
  • Chip Inspection: Chips should be small, curled, and consistent. Long stringers indicate feed is too low or speed is too high.
